Girl Scout cookie donations make a sweet and touching gift to UC Davis Health

The generosity of the Sacramento community to support UC Davis Health with meals, snacks and services has lifted a lot of spirits for people battling COVID-19 throughout the health system. But there are some donations that just touch the heart – and the sweet tooth – especially the recent gifts of Girl Scout cookies.

More than 400 boxes of Girl Scout cookies have been donated to UC Davis Health. More than 400 boxes of Girl Scout cookies have been donated to UC Davis Health.

More than 400 boxes of cookies have made their way to UC Davis Health in recent days and are being spread this week across the Sacramento campus and other locales in the area, said Khanh-Nhat Tran-Viet, Community Hospital Partnerships and Affiliations director.

They came from three sources, including local Girl Scout Troop 762, which donated 28 boxes and sent a hand-drawn sign that said, “Thank you for supporting our community,” and included signatures from the scouts, three exclamation points and four hearts.

“There is something extra touching about receiving Girl Scout cookies,” Tran-Viet said. “Maybe it’s because we see how hard the kids normally work to sell them. It just plucked the heart strings of everyone here when they reached out to us.”

Girl Scouts of the USA recently told their troops to stop selling cookies door-to-door or at stands to maintain social distancing. So, the ever-resourceful troops found another good use for their cookies – their donations to UC Davis Health and others on the front lines battling COVID-19.

It wasn’t just the troops. One generous anonymous donor who bought cookies online as a thank you to health care workers donated 20 boxes to UC Davis Health. And the leadership of the regional Girl Scouts Heart of Central California (which includes board member LeShelle May, wife of UC Davis Chancellor Gary May) donated more than 350 boxes.

Tran-Viet said his team assembled the boxes into variety packs and are delivering them to 16 UC Davis Health locations this week.
