Construction and contracting companies that use masks and other personal protection equipment for their work have mounted their own campaign to help UC Davis Health and its patients battle COVID-19.
A few large companies donated boxes of N95 masks on Wednesday and are connecting with colleagues in the trade to donate, too. Other smaller companies with no supplies to contribute are asking their employees to donate financially and, crucially, to give blood.
“I was listening to the news and I thought, ‘We should help. We can contribute,’” said Toby Leitch of Turner Construction, the general contractors for the North Addition. “I talked to my safety guys. We said, ‘We have some masks, we have to get those to people who can use them.’”
Leitch also reached out to partners in the construction trades and asked them to donate whatever safety equipment they could. Other firms were already talking about donations, too. Among the companies that donated by Wednesday were McCarthy Building Companies and Rudolph and Sletten.
“The construction industry is pretty tight-knit,” Leitch said. “We’re aware of what the community needs and what the patients need. Everyone wants to help any way we can.”
A small snowball got started when Leitch called Thomas Emme, UC Davis Health’s Facilities Design and Construction manager, and asked if there was any way Turner could help. It gave Emme the thought to contact other UC Davis Health construction partners who use a range of protective gear in their work, including masks, face shields and goggles.
The response was more than Emme expected. Some larger companies offered the supplies they had to give. Others on Wednesday were still collecting protection gear. A smaller mechanical contractor apologized that they were out of new protective gear but asked employees to give blood.
“Their generosity and their concern for our medical workers and our patients is touching to all of us,” Emme said. “When we learned that all these contractors around Northern California were talking among themselves about how to help us, we didn’t know what to say. We were really overwhelmed by their concern for us and for all the people we help.”
