ECHO Special Edition
Due to COVID-19 related school closures, teachers and other educators are in a key position to support families with setting up positive behavior supports that can help to prevent behavior challenges. This ECHO Autism: Special Edition series will provide teachers and other educators with tools, strategies and resources to coach families in how to set up new learning routines while supporting positive behavior during home-based instruction.
Partnering with Families offers strategies for educators who are starting to set up distance education with their students including: how to engage families in the planning process, develop a coaching session agenda, and shares resource for parent coaching.
How the Activity Matrix and Visual Schedules Can Support Home-based Instruction for Students with ASD
Learn how the Activity Matrix and Visual Schedules Can:
coordinate the efforts of the IEP Team in assisting families during school closure
- help families set up new and effective learning routines during home-based instruction
- support the implementation of the EBPs for individuals with ASD: Naturalistic Intervention; Visual Supports; and Antecedent Based Interventions
This presentation covers strategies to support new learning routines and positive behaviors during distance learning. Multiple visual supports are covered including methods for supporting families with implementing these strategies at home. Structuring the learning environment, using work systems, timers and count down methods, choices and choice boards and first-then strategies are a few of the strategies covered.
This ECHO Autism Special Edition on Supporting Positive Behavior at Home highlights critical aspects of partnering with parents to build capacity in their understanding of Behavior as a form of communication. This presentation provides tools to educators to help guide parents through understanding their child's behavior and how to teach and reinforce replacement skills.
Due to the COVID-19 crisis many children with autism are experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety and need strategies to support self-regulation. This presentation will describe some of those strategies and how professionals can support parents with implementing them in the home.
