Sports Performance and Wellness Internship
The UC Davis Sports Performance and Wellness Program is housed within UC Davis Sports Medicine, in an approximately 10,000-square-foot facility in downtown Sacramento, California. The clinic has been in operation since 2001 and incorporates a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach in helping individuals and groups achieve their optimal health and athletic performance.
Our staff includes nationally renown orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine physicians, exercise physiologists, biomechanical engineers and sports nutritionists, experienced in injury treatment and prevention, sports performance improvement and training program development. We offer a variety of services to athletes of all abilities, provide training to a wide array of students, from undergraduates to medical residents, and participate in cutting edge, applied research in the field of Sports Medicine.
Our clinic sees on average 50 to 80 patients per day and our Sports Performance Lab tests three to six clients per day. Our clientele ranges from sedentary individuals interested in starting an exercise program to elite professional athletes, from injured athletes to first responders.
The Sports Medicine Clinic provides a variety of services, including:
- Acute and chronic sports injury assessment, management and prevention including surgical and non-surgical interventions and biomechanical analysis
- Care of sports-related and general medical needs of athletes of all ages and abilities
- Sports performance program for athletes desiring to maximize training and improve performance through physiological, biomechanical and nutritional assessment
- Fitness assessment program which provides comprehensive evaluation for individuals, groups or corporations interested in health promotion, starting an exercise program or increasing fitness level
- Pre-participation sports physicals
Assessments performed by the Sports Performance and Wellness include:
- Body composition analysis via DXA scan
- Resting and exercise metabolic testing
- VO2max and aerobic threshold determination
- Blood lactate profile with lactate threshold determination
- Medical clearance exam
- Resting blood pressure and electrocardiogram
- Pulmonary function assessment
- 12 lead exercise electrocardiogram and exercise blood pressure
- Bicycle fitting and sizing
- Gait analysis
- Functional Movement Screening
- Tests for muscular strength and flexibility
- Test interpretation and exercise training consultation
- Sport and exercise training consultation
- Sports Nutrition
How to apply for the intern program
We are looking for enthusiastic, eager-to-learn students willing to take initiative and become immersed in all aspects of the program. The program is open to UC Davis undergraduate and graduate students in exercise physiology, biomechanics or related fields. Non-UC Davis students are welcome to apply, although preference will be given to UC Davis students.
- Minimum two quarter (six month) commitment
- Minimum of four hours per week (typically a single shift, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.)
- Submit resume and cover letter
- Orientation by UC Davis Health System's Volunteer Services Program
- Current CPR certification (preferably for health care providers)
- Current TB test (within last year)
- Completion of the Hepatitis B vaccination series
A typical day for an volunteer might begin by reviewing a client’s health history and medical chart, explaining the test procedures to the client, and performing resting measurements of cardiac and pulmonary function.
The next tasks would depend on the type of test the client was performing, but would probably involve setting up the exercise and metabolic equipment, calibrating equipment, and supervising a graded exercise test. Measurements taken during the test might be blood pressure, rate of perceived exertion, power output, heart rate, ECG and blood lactate measurements.
The volunteer might then enter the exercise data in spreadsheets and calculate certain physiological variables such as VO2peak, maximal heart rate, lactate threshold and training zones based on the test results. The volunteer would then explain the test results, give the client an exercise prescription and training tips and prepare the laboratory and equipment for the next client.
Other activities might include helping with a research study, attending a journal club meeting, performing biomechanical analyses, attending health fairs and expos, traveling to off-site locations for team or camp testing or general help in the lab.
Interns involved in The UC Davis Sports Performance Program will gain invaluable experience by learning cutting-edge techniques and procedures from nationally-renowned orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine specialists experienced in injury assessment, management and prevention and improving sports performance through optimizing exercise training. It would be difficult for a volunteer to find a more comprehensive, multidisciplinary program and staff to gain experience in the field of exercise science.
At this time, there is no stipend offered. However, academic credit and transcript notation can be arranged through the UC Davis Internship and Career Center. We look forward to seeing you in our lab.
