Bowlus was one of eight liver experts recognized at the foundation’s Salute to Excellence, held virtually on Dec. 15. The winners were selected based on peer nominations.

Bowlus is an expert in inflammatory liver disease. He is nationally known for his work in identifying markers, treatments and practice guidelines for primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). These conditions target the bile ducts and can progress to cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancers.

“The American Liver Foundation is proud to honor the impressive contributions Dr. Bowlus has made in the field of hepatology,” said Lynn Gardiner Seim, executive vice president and chief operating officer at the foundation. The organization promotes education, advocacy, support services and research for the prevention, treatment and cure of liver disease.

The care team of the UC Davis Health Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology treats the broad range of liver diseases, including hepatitis B and C, fatty liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, PSC, PBC, Wilson disease, and other complex liver and GI conditions. More information about the team, the conditions they treat and their groundbreaking research, is on the division’s website.
