Year of the Nurse blog, Judie Boehmer: ‘Look at the person wholly, don't just look at it as a task’

Judie Boehmer

Early in her career, UC Davis Health’s Judie Boehmer had two patients who left an indelible impression on her, and shaped her view of what it means to truly care for the whole person: a woman who underwent gender confirmation surgery, and a man who lost both of his eyes due to a diabetic fungal infection. They taught her the importance of nurturing a genuine relationship with patients – and connecting on a personal and meaningful level.

Hear Judie share her experiences with these patients, in her own words.

In celebration of Florence Nightingale's 200th birthday, 2020 is the Year of the Nurse. Beginning on National Nurses Week (May 6-12) and continuing throughout the year, a special blog will feature the stories, memories and motivations of UC Davis Health nurses.

Hear their words, and get to know why and how they invest such heart, passion, expertise and commitment in their life-changing work.
