Year of the Nurse blog, Susan Henning: ‘It’s that bond with people that keeps me in nursing’

Susan Henning

For Susan Henning, the close bonds she forms with patients are the most rewarding part of her job as a clinical nurse at UC Davis Health. But because of that connection, she also experiences the pain of watching them suffer and struggle – which pushes her closer to retirement. Despite those challenging moments and hard days, there is one thing that always keeps her coming back to the job.

Learn what that special thing is, as Susan explains the ups and downs of her work, in her own words.

In celebration of Florence Nightingale's 200th birthday, 2020 is the Year of the Nurse. Beginning on National Nurses Week (May 6-12) and continuing throughout the year, a special blog will feature the stories, memories and motivations of UC Davis Health nurses.

Hear their words, and get to know why and how they invest such heart, passion, expertise and commitment in their life-changing work.
