Year of the Nurse blog, Kristine Ahlberg: ‘I was the bridge between the two of them’

Nurses sometimes have an “unbelievable” opportunity to change a life in a truly memorable way.

For Kristine Ahlberg, that chance came when she flew to Mexico City to bring back the stem cells a patient she needed from the woman’s sister. While she focused on the nursing aspect of safely transporting the product back to the U.S., she was also struck by the deep emotional and symbolic significance of the act.

She had served as a bridge between the two sisters – who hadn’t seen each other in a decade. As one of the sisters said to Kristine: “You are my eyes. You’ve seen my sister. Tell me what she looks like. Tell me how she is.”
