Specialty: Communication and family engagement in the intensive care unit, family outcomes in critical illness

Ji Won Shin is a Heather M. Young Postdoctoral Scholar at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. She is mentored by Associate Dean for Research Janice Bell and Assistant Professor in the Family Caregiving Institute Julie Bidwell. Her research is focused on family engagement in the intensive care unit (ICU) and family outcomes in acute-critical illness.

For the past five years, she worked on clinic- and community-based research projects on aging issues and communication in the intensive care units. Shin’s dissertation research focused on testing a newly developed electronic patient communication application with ICU family caregivers. She explored family communication experience during mechanical ventilation and emotions while communicating with the patient.

Prior to joining the School of Nursing, Shin served as an adjunct instructor in research and a research assistant at The Ohio State University College of Nursing. She provided doctoral course support, including guest lectures, and collaborated on manuscript and research data management and analysis. Before pursuing her doctoral degree, she gained expertise in critical care and psychiatric nursing at the Seoul National University Hospital, in South Korea.

Shin earned a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from The Ohio State University College of Nursing. She earned a Master of Science in Nursing Degree from The Graduate School of Ewha Women’s University in Seoul, Korea. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree, also from Ewha Women’s University.

She has published articles in prominent publications in her field, including Geriatric Nursing, Critical Care Nursing Clinics, and the Journal of Applied Gerontology. She has led podium and poster presentations at several conferences, including the American Thoracic Society International Conference, National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence Leadership Conference, and the Gerontological Society of America Annual Scientific Meeting.
